  • Grapefruit diet - a fad weight loss diet that claims that grapefruit has fat-burning properties and suggests eating half a grapefruit or drinking a glass of grapefruit juice before each meal.
  • Obesity - a condition where the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and mammals is increased to a point where it is thought to be a significant risk factor for certain health conditions as well as increased mortality.
  • Phony weight loss device - Appetite suppressing eyeglasses are common eyeglasses with colored lenses that claim to project an image to the retina which dampens the desire to eat. There is no FDA evidence that these work.
  • Carbohydrate - any of a group of organic compounds that includes sugars, starches, celluloses, and gums and serves as a major energy source in the diet of animals.
  • Fat blockers - substances which purport to physically absorb fat and mechanically interfere with the fat a person eats, have not been proven to be safe or effective by the FDA.
